To own or rent an airplane?

Let's assume you've been caught by the aviation bug... You want to spend as much time in the air as possible and have fun punching holes in the sky or travel comfortably and with speed from A to B. There's not that many options really... You can either own or rent an airplane. Or get paid to fly for someone else, but then again, this might not be much fun these days ;-)

No matter how hard you try to justify owning an airplane, renting/being a member of a flying club is cheaper in almost any case (comparing same types of aircraft).

Hence there must be other arguments:
  • There are aircraft types that you can't just rent at the nextbest flying club.
  • Performance / Challenge. 110kts in a PA28 might get boring over time...
  • Availability / Restrictions. No minimum hours / day when owning etc...
  • Condition / Care. An airplane you own will be kept in a nicer shape than a 10 year old flying club workhorse.
  • Decisions. You can decide what to do when and where. With an experimental you even get to design your own instrument panel. How could it get any cooler than that?!?
  • Other people own horses, houses, ferraris, you name it... Why shouldn't we ;-) ?
  • Freedom. No speed limits! (except physical limits you HAVE to respect cause they save your ...ss)
  • and plenty more, emotions definitely affect personal priorities...

Why did we enter the world of experimentals? read on...
